I'm walking through the fallow field
where my dreams and hopes used to grow
where I used to harvest happiness
I've planted the seeds of emptiness
If this crop is an indication
then it's true you reap what you sow

It's hard to stand tall in winds of adversity
when my roots don't run very deep
It's hard to encourage growth or maturity
when my vine bears nothing to keep

No green things here to be warmed by the sun
No flowers or fruit here to pick
Dark clouds gather over this barren plain
They thunder they lightning but refuse to rain
If nurturing the soul is healthy
then why is my heart's crop so sick?

Jeff,
Only a temporary drought, my friend. Endure and it will pass... Good write, I always enjoy analogies gleened from nature. Peace.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

So very true, Larry.

It seems as if we go through such process to get where we are meant to be.

Larry, littlewing, Hollow,
Thank you all for reading and commenting. The concern shown by my fellow PiPsters never fails to touch me. But for the record, this poem is not a reflection of my current mood. Actually, I'm rather happy these days I agree wholeheartedly with littlewing though that it's necessary to go through the hardships to find your way to happiness. I did exactly that
Like Larry, I enjoy analogies that use nature. It was while driving through the newly harvested cornfields of Illinois that it occured to me how desolate and "empty" they looked without crops... thus this poem.
