This moves, like it always had to
Watching the dashes on the road, become a line
There’s the ghosts of the past in the ditch
This is the spot that I remember well
The spot where this material world ends
And the mountains, like knives in the landscape

Where are we going?
“I doubt we ever even knew”
What are we doing?
“Just finding our way through”
This underpass
Its lights are blinding me
“But we’re going to be okay”
That’s what she’d say

It’s funny how that country excursion
Can turn into the meaning of your life
We’re burning gasoline
Just like we’re burning you and me
Funny how the steering wheel
Seems to be the only thing missing

That tree was brown and it was cracked
Just like so many before it
“Loving you forever” into the bark
She left the razor in the park
And then she touched the train
To forget me, to forget her, to forget me

Now this stream
I thought you’d understand
It’s funny how a little pavement
Can turn into the rest of your life
We used to dream
We used to scream
I guess it got old for you

This is my minute
The minute of a man
Saying all he can
Before he rides the stream
The one that floats a dream
I guess that dream sank
And at the end of this brick wall
We’re all going to be okay…

Ryan?

your writing is just booming
lately . . My God
you have gone leaps and bounds
in a month

And the mountains, like knives in the landscape
(I love that line)

this is bitter beauty
