The Unholy Crusade

Through the centuries people have died
Be they young or old,
But more have died in the name of God
Through eons of time untold.

Each zealot takes upon himself to be
A harbinger of death
And wreak havoc upon the masses
With the Lord’s name upon his breath.

The passage of time has ceased to bring
Any sanity to the insane
The crusade long outlives the crusader
There will be others to kill again.

What is so holy about a crusade
That heralds pain and sorrow
To the countless that perish needlessly
Who’ll never see the light of tomorrow.

Did God intend for his cherished flock
To shepherd the weak and tame
Or shed the blood of the innocent lamb
Just to glorify the Lord’s name.

I see no straying from truth in this poem/statement....only questions and statements that have crossed my mind my whole life.(especially the question in the last stanza) I have a Quaker background, long ago we friends came to the conclusion that to kill for peace was wrong and that the lord of peace has never been pleased with that kind of action. I believe you will not get many replies to this poem, I hope I am wrong, I would like to see opinions of others on what you have written here...
Peace to you and all that you love....

Ice,
Thank you for reading my poem. I believe that there is no immediate solution to the problem of war. There have been and always will be dissidents in soceity who will take it upon themselves to justify killing in some form or fashion. Religion is not the only reason for lack of international peace. Politics are also a major contributor of war.

Thank you very much for this write.
Indeed, how could anyone justify all these deaths in the name of any holy leader.

(tears fall down my cheeks) Honestly, being a Catholic and of course respecting the Pope and Eucharist and accepting some things as sinful, I find it disturbing how Israel is putting up the "Apartheid Wall" over Palestine's own territory, and throwing all the activists like Kate Raphael out! I am disgusted with that, I don't mind Israel being there from the beginning but to continue taking their land deliberately is awful, I pray a peaceful compromise can be made, crusades always last longer than crusaders, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Anwaar, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Dear Mistletoe,
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Though the poem refers to the crusade it does not imply a Christian Crusade but any form of war crusade in any religion. War itself is a menace more than it being a necessity...an excuse often used by radical fanatics to achieve personal agendas without regard of the consequences to the human race...
You have a great heart and I respect and value your opinions on this subject since they are very similar to mine..
Peace to you..
Anwaar.
