"You will hardly know who I am or what I mean,
But I shall be good health to you nevertheless,
And filter and fibre your blood."
.
Walt Whitman, "Song Of Myself" #52
***********************************
Feeding Deer.....by ice
*
They do not flee anymore
When someone passes the window
Or walks the dog in the front yard,
Like they did in December;
Nor take flight to the woods edge
And stomp their feet to startle-
me, as if I were a predator;
No warning snort blows
Into the cold still silence;
They just stand there,
Breathing, white-soft columns
Into the cold, sharp zero.
*
(To help you stand strong)
*
My brothers and sisters
You do not know me, but
I will share with you my harvest.
Do not be afraid,
There is flesh in my freezer
And the bodies of trees
Are stacked in short pieces,
Dried and arranged
To ease the stoves hunger,
It is winter...
I am warm and fed
And desire to share the cache,
Of summers bounty in my crib.
*
(At twilight, around the corn-pile)
*
They dance in a circle,
At the bottom of seasons
With no sound of music,
Without knowledge of reasons.
They do not know
The songs in its downbeat
That they and I sing,
And cold lyrics of winter,
Will be soundless in spring.
*
end

This is a beautiful piece filled with vivid imagery.
Very much enjoyed the read.
~Smiles & Hugs, Nancy~

watch the deer come close
just outside the cottage door
hoof tracks in the snow.

    In the midst of winter..
I found there lives within me,
    an invincible summer.

(sigh) Oh Ford, this is wonderful, dearest friend, you know how I love Walt Whitman and how heroic he is to my heart, God Bless You, this is so peaceful and lovely, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ford, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Beautiful writing can only be done when you have a beautiful subject...and the deer are simply that...:-)
Thank you for reading and commenting..

Always nice to see your loving replies, I am glad you liked the poem....The deer are still outside my window in the back yard, I can see their sillhouettes against the backdrop of snow....:-)

Ford

This makes me long for a place far enough away from the city, for the deer.  Beautiful writing, my friend...and much heart!

This place you have painted with your words sounds so peaceful. I don't have deer, but I do have two bunnies that come to visit and love the carrots I offer in heartfelt love.

This is exactly how deer should be caught,
living, and a delight to behold.
