He is a giant in my life.
His words have guided me
To reach inside and give the best
I can in poetry.

They say that we're all equals
No one better than the rest
But I can say without a doubt
To me he is the best.

If one day I could write some verse
Just half as well as he
Then I could lie within my grave
At peace eternally.

No one has mentioned it today
So I'd like you to know
It is the birthday of my giant
Edgar Allen Poe.

You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Balladeer, thank you for sharing!

A fantastic tribute 'Deer!
The world of poetry would not be what it is
without the works of Poe.
Well done...and Happy Birthday Poe.

He is the master of the tale,
His cadence is divine,
His morals of the story give me
Chills right down my spine.

He is a marvel in my world,
His stories touch me so,
Though others have their inspiration,
Such as Keats and Poe ...

There is another I admire,
Whose writing I revere,
He is the storyteller ...
He's our own sweet Balladeer.

A wonderful tribute Michael!
Happy Birthday to Poe,
And a hug to you!

Best wishes,
/Kit

I noticed you had a "typo" in this
fine poem...so I corrected it for you
here

I can in poetry.

But I can say without a doubt
To me he is the best.

No one has mentioned it today
So I'd like you to know
And though it's not his birthday
It's my good old buddy Toe.

Balladeer~
To be honest with you ... I was 'waiting for the twist' ... thought SURE this one was for the TOE man ... and found it to be for the POE man~

Nicely done ... and THEN ... what's this I see ???
TOE coming in with a correction ... as funny as can be~

Well, 'Deer, I may have to dispute you on some of what you said.  You write verse that is way, way over half as good as Poe's.  Some of my favorite poems of all time were written by you.  Poe is OK, but I've gotten a lot more common sense advice out of what you've written that I ever will get from Poe.

BTW - Did you know that Poe's symptoms indicate that he died from rabies, not alcohol or drugs as stated in common theory?

Have to agree here with Mike, one day (sorry to say) someone will be reading a similar tribute to you I would imagine.  If he was your mentor, he certainly taught you well. Makes me wonder if he ever knew he would have had this much influence on the written word (and I sure don't mean Toe   LOL.)

Well, you people sure know how to make someone feel good. Kit, your poem really touched me. How I wish I had a small part of the ability Poe had...he will always be the king in my eyes. Thank you all so very much for reading and making such nice comments.

Toerag, you're a trip!!! ...but I said POE, not POOR!!

Hey Michael, just so you know
you do it even better than Poe,

Who else than Deer could write this song
About a Poet dear to me
Poe wrote about this Raven bird
This bird I've actually seen, you see

He would be proud of you my Deer
If he could read your tales in rhyme
I can imagine you being friends
If you had lived in dear Poe's time

And when I'm old I'll have two books
One of Poe and one of you
Because my friend, that man's sensation
Is the same you give me too

Happy, Happy Birthday Poe
and thank you Deer for letting us know

The Dutchie

Like scattered leaves...my words will flow
