Listening to every heart

0 posted 2004-01-11 09:16 AM

‘Twas but on that, a January morn
In an early outing of mundane
When overhead and overheard
The geese were in refrain

Not just one but several vees
Flew overhead and were heard
When I, in a sweet, brief, catch of time,
Wanted to be that bird.

For in this cool first month of year
They were on a southerly flight
Reminding me that the chill is still here
And ahead, long, cold winter nights.

What’s to come? I thought to say,
The sun is sort of out, today
High whipped tails of clouds in blue
Were not lending any clues.

What’s to come? What’s in the wind?
Something magical, I would pray.
Something that guided the geese, again,
Something to visit my days.

Mayhap the dance of snow comes still,
And I, in white surround
Might see the footprints of dear friends
Come traipse this snowy ground.

It’s much too soon to see the bloom
Of crocus or daffodils
I checked the limbs, no buds in peek
To give my spring its thrill.

The geese flew on, down to the south
Their sound of “come with me”,
Stays my mind and haunts my soul
And inks my reverie.

The geese were strong
  in form of vee
I drifted in their melody
  singing simple songs of me

I am the laggard bird.

Pelicans, too, fly in constellations, primarily a vee.  A very social-ladder kind of flight, with the first being the one of strength, and those behind, the ones who need a little encouragement from sidemates.  I wonder if geese are of the same nature.

This is a beautifully written poem about internal natures and wants.  Enjoyed much.

In the deep of winter, there is always the promise of spring. The geese will return pushed by warming winds from the south very soon.

Gosh I love this...
We still have some on the bay here...
Aptly named Goose Bay.
Some stay year round.
Beautiful creatures.

I found there lives within me,
    an invincible summer.

Sunshine...Enjoyed

Magical tunes from birds in flight
On their journey thru day and night
They fly so high...almost out of sight
They leave behind Winter's cold bite

Sunshine, I enjoyed this very much.  I'm one of those, out in January checking for buds and shoots!  I know it's too early, but I wouldn't want to miss that first trillium!  ~K~

I love the geese, we have hundreds that flock here every winter, to Silver Lake the water is powered by the power plant which is warm for them, and in early morning with a fog its beautiful to see ..... I will keep this, and thank you

"Their sound of “come with me”,
Stays my mind and haunts my soul"

Some years ago, near an Oregon wetlands, I was privileged to observe a southbound flight of honkers.  There were thousands in vee after vee.  It was a once in a lifetime view.
Wonderful tale you weave.  The yearning in the couplet above reminds me of the old Frankie Lane tune "I must go where the wild goose goes."  Thanks for the memories.  KJ

I love to watch the geese move across the sky in v formation: to watch them systematically change positions like a well oiled machine....the wonders of nature!
Fantastic work.

A beautiful way to describe a sight we so often take for granted.... Next time I see a flying "vee" i'll stop and take it in..thinking of this poem.
Well written.
Thanx for sharing.

Karilea, We see those amazing V formations all the time in our skies here. The sad thing is that the geese are so used to being fed by humans, they don't want to leave and fly south! They are so beautiful up close. I hand fed one once and it allowed me to touch it's soft neck. Awesome! Love this write. hugs, Chris
