The Faded Violet
~*Marge Tindal*~

In my hands I hold a gift of perfect measure.
A collection of Favorite Poems that I'll always treasure.
Bound in very old leather, embellished with gilding of gold,
given as a birthday gift to someone I do not know.

A young lady was given this very gift,
from a friend who took the time,
penciling upon the pages
an inscription that has lasted through the ages.

Miss Pauline Copping
on her 19th birthday ~
Presented by
Mamie Horisholder
June 20th, 1887

My eyes have caressed the masterpieces
contained within this precious gifting
and I felt the spirit of Pauline
lingering within the sifting.

On page two hundred forty seven
I found a treasured piece,
a tiny perfect pressed violet
in a small lacy handkerchief,
with this poem of anonymity.

The Faded Violet

You gave it me long years ago,
In the shadowy evening time -
While the clouds stole round the mountain side,
And the bells rang out a chime.
The blossoms listened at our feet -
The trees stooped from above.
You said, "This flower will say for me
All that my heart says - love."
'Tis long ago, but I have yet
That little faded violet.

And life was at its zenith then,
The world ne'er seemed so bright,
For the sweetest story ever told
I've kissed my violet blue,
And said, "E'en as I keep my flower,
So will my love be true."
Ah me -- I have it hidden yet -
That little faded violet.

We parted long, long months ago,
With not a sigh to tell
That once in far-off happy days,
We two had loved so well.
We parted with but few cold words,
We two who oft had said
Not all the world should come between.
Ah well - the love was dead -
The love was dead, but yet, but yet
I keep my faded violet.

So very tenderly I placed it
back where it has lain for years.
A little piece of Pauline's heart
in a hanky of her tears.

I hope that somehow Pauline Copping knows,
that the faded violet remains.
After one hundred sixteen years,
I treasure ~ her treasure.

Marge, a repost?  I'm sorry, I did not see the first.  Now, I hope you will understand, that the novel that I've been working on...will please you so very much.

But, there's always been a kinship, an understanding....even with speed bumps in the road.  So...if and when the book is picked up?  I hope you will find yourself saying....

I know her!  Keep your fingers crossed, gal!

This...is wonderful.  Thank you!

Marge,

I don't often get goose bumps while reading, but this piece sent them up and down my arms.   You did such a fine job conveying emotion.  I believe this might be my favorite on Passions so far.  It will go with me long after reading. It has so many textures with emotions.  Thank you so much for reposting this, presenting us all the gifting.

The dreams of what could have been remain, even though the love may have faded. Beautifully touching, Marge.

love truly is powerful...
and you've shown here how it lasts...
and ever imprints the souls of many.
Beautiful.
