How did we get here from where we started;
how did love's soft caressing breeze
turn into this howling sand storm
tearing at my flesh,
shredding veins,
choking off the flow of life's blood to my soul?

Etta James and Lady Day are living in my speakers tonight
pouring out their pleading hearts,
their raw and tortured souls naked here,
right here
in this room in front of god and everyone
except there's no one here who knows
but me,
no one else to see
to be embarrassed by such blatant honesty;
I've got to be careful now,
‘cause if Nina Simone shows up
it'll be just that much harder to get out of here alive.

I started to daydream today about a fifth of Wild Turkey,
and a glass,
and a large bag of ice;
okay in a pinch I could pass on the ice,
god knows I can even skip the glass;
maybe I should sleep more
but I don't think that's why my eyes burn,
why I yearn for any kind of sweet oblivion,
it is after all that sloppy happy party time of year.

So much life has gone by now
yet somehow,
without my consent,
I sometimes still can feel
the touch of strangers on your skin,
the shattering invasion
of passions exploding
at the very peaks of your emotions,
the long sailing highs
as you skip through each aftershock
until exhaustion brings us both back
down to your preferred simplicity,
our separate safe realities;
It was more romantic when I was there,
now it would be more polite if it didn't interfere
with whatever I happen to be doing at the time.

I've given up thinking of this caprice as some unfair penalty
levied on me by petty gods,
and I know that it is not a witch's curse,
I am better shielded than the uninitiated;
this thing of sharing concurrent sense,
once so endearing
cute and so perverse,
has become just another brick to carry in my life
and I find I can not even hate you for running fast and far;
I suppose in some other life
I would have done the same.
Why give it a name
if it doesn't bless your preference over fate?

This time of year always seems harder than the rest.
Is it that way for everyone?
I guess these love hate relationships have their little quirks.
Maybe that's why the whiskey calls me
so much more strongly than most other times;
doesn't matter really,
right now I'm more like you than me,
I'll go with anything that works.

I'm listening to Etta singing "Someone To Watch Over Me right this very second...
This write is absolutely amazing, and on par with anything they could ver sing.
Phenominal job, sir, and it is added to the library.

Cause in my dreams it's always there
The evil face that twists my mind
And brings me to despair.

I just wrote what seemed to be your major words as I read.

Born, life, blood sucking, emotion, god, change of track, love of life thinking it leaves without regret, peace. only if you care.

A desire to see the back of everyone seemed to be the main point.

Ringo ~ Thank you for reading my poem and for your kind compliment.  Strange about the music; maybe there is something in the air? *smile*

DavePage ~ Well, I have to tell you that I think you've got your own thing going on there.  I see no problem with the main point you saw nor with the words that came to your mind, but those things are very much your trip, not mine.  Thank you for reading and for taking the time to comment.

Love's no guarantee against pain, do I ever know that, my friend. Going through the pain and reaching the other side together is the secret, if ever you can manage it. And if you can, you're blessed. If not, well, there will be plenty of opportunities to go through it again......!

a good thing I don't drink..or rather  can't drink (or hold my liquor)or I would feel like joining you after reading this...

I love and hate this time of year for now.
Maybe next year I won't. And since I am home flu-bound for this New Year's I will be in safe company here in poetry land tonight.

Wishing you happiness and peace this coming New Year.

"This time of year always seems harder than the rest.

There are three or four times of year that are hard for me...this is one.

Wishing you peace and some little joys in the new year.  Hugs!

Dang! wish I'd written that line.

I'll toast to you with a glass of fine whine later.

Beautiful write!  You write of sadness, nostalgia, resignation, and wisdom many of us can identify with.  Right down to the whiskey....    Happy New Year, Icebox.  ~K~

"There's a somebody I'm longing to see..
I hope that he, turns out to be..
Someone to watch over me..."

And now I shall sail in to the new year
with that melody playing over and over in my head...

What a nostalgic write sir.
Perhaps it is that time of year,
some of us seem to get very sentimental.
I know, I do.

All the best in 2004!
~Soft smiles & gentle hugs, Nancy~

    In the midst of winter..
I found there lives within me,
    an invincible summer.
