The elders gather ’round the old wood stove
warming hands and feet,
sharing some soul in ancient rhyme
while youth race ‘round the shiny snowmobile outside at the same time,
awaiting their turn to ride off
into the woods at break-neck speeds,
tearing up the old sled trails
with the lines of
‘Progress.’

I sit underneath whitened willows wondering,
whatever happened to that old trapper that lived in the woods?
the one who never said more than three words without a pause,
the one who knew the birds from the bees,
who understood the raucous ravens,
saw sly looks from the meandering moose?

You cannot go back, or so I’ve been told.
But there are many days when I dream
of returning to the times of Old, to watch the sun
rise without the envelope of the colors of smog.
Then I remember the shiny new refrigerator,
indoor plumbing, and a fast PC on the Net.
I am once again grounded
into the reality called TODAY,
and cannot forget how readily I embrace
the gifts of the modern world.

Kacy,  this could be an inspirational write.
I so identify with this...thinking back to
the more simple of times,  when a nickel
got you something and a quarter was heaven.

But...  then I come back here...and it is
all of you that I wouldn't have,  if this
were not what it is today...

Thanks, Barry. Yes, I sometimes find myself in conflict, but only for a few minutes. Then the flusher brings me back to reality, if the PC doesn't. LOL, sorry 'bout the graphical imagery.
