I grew up a'hearing that cowboys don't cry.
It just ain't the right thing to do.
A man must be strong, and hold feelin's in...
But, partner, those things just ain't true.

When I was a kid, and we watched Old Yeller-
I must have got dirt in my eye...
I was too proud to sit there and beller,
Besides which, us cowboy's don't cry.

Then in my twenties, my granddaddy passed-
And I shook my fist at the sky...
And went and got drunk, and mad at the Lord...
And muttered, "Real cowboys don't cry".

Then in the nineties, my brother was shot...
It hurt me to see family die...
And then I discovered, what I'd known all along.
Sometimes a cowboy does cry.

I've altered my saying...at least, just a bit.
Emotions will make us do such...
What I tell the boys, down at the corrals...
Is, "Cowboy's don't cry...very much".

You're right John. Emotions can't be bottled up and ignored.  There's nothing wrong with being sensitive and showing what's in our hearts.  Well written.  And Merry Christmas my friend.

John, even though this was sad,
I did enjoy it. I thionk that it takes
a very strong man to show his
true emotions.

I think it takes a mighty strong cowboy to show his emotions. Gunslinger, this just might be my new favourite write of yours. So, I am putting into my library! hugs, Chris

Hi John,

Enjoyed your work--and I tell you I listen to a lot of cowboy poets... Waddie Mitchell and such, and those guys if they don't will definitely pull the tears out of you.

You have a good rapport with your reader, and the tone of your work is relaxed and honest.  Nice job.

Very powerful and sad, Gunslinger.
Sure, cowboys don't cry if the hurt is physical,
but for the deep hurt of such a loss,
you can cry mister, you can cry.

I really liked it.

I have another saying.

Never trust a cowboy that won't cry.

Happy holidays, cowboy!

this was sucn a wonderful write, even
though a little on the sad side. I think
a real cowboy should cry...it shows emotion

Happy Holidays,

Hey cowboy, you can cry anytime you need to.  I like this poem, just like I like everything I've ever read by you. Well done.
