Once upon a Christmas Eve,
A blizzard raged with no reprieve,
Biting winds straight from the north,
No man nor creature ventured forth.
A new born child, a baby boy
Should be a time of boundless joy,
An accident, a father dies,
Left alone, a mother cries.
Times were lean, the cupboards bare,
As she sat there in despair,
Fire dying, wood near gone,
Would they make it to Christmas dawn?
Then at the door, there came a knock,
It must have been, nigh ten o'clock.
There stood a man she did not know,
In the cold and blowing snow.
May I come in, stand by your fire,
To warm myself my sole desire,
For just a moment, please be so kind,
Then I'll be gone, if you don't mind.
She let him in, thought, how can I not?
I'll get some food, it's not a lot,
A slice of bread, a cup of tea,
How is it that you came to be
Out in a blizzard on Christmas Eve,
Please stay the night, no need to leave,
But he replied, I now must go,
I've things to do, I thank you though,
Through the door, into the night,
When she saw in fire's light,
An envelope, just laying there,
Where he'd been standing, on a chair,
To the door, she ran real fast,
Where she saw the storm had passed,
North winds had waned, fresh fallen snow,
Sparkled bright in moon's soft glow.
No man she saw, to her surprise,
No footprints lay before her eyes,
In puzzlement, she turned inside,
Her son now slept, no longer cried,
She picked up the envelope,
Filled with money, filled with hope,
On Christmas Eve, in storm's relent,
A Christmas moon; an angel sent.

One never knows the when or where of such an encounter. Pondering the possibility is always comforting. Nicely done, Tim!
