standing on a shadow's lace

Keeping

smudged I see
myself there in
the distance burning
as blue and orange
as the thing
designed to protect
who has made me
keeper of the flame
when cold bites
at me uncontrollably
sitting at feet
as ghost dogs gnaw
nightly growling to moons
in flesh crawl moan
bouncing off
midnight sky breaking
and scattering to earth
all to uphold
a promise
un-kept to me
