in the shadows

It is the time of year
when I feel the need
to put my soul in order,
to rearrange the clutter
and trim the fraying threads
of my emotions.

I patch the cracks in the thick walls
that keep me from attacks
by others' misguided forays
of attempted familiarity,
and burn the proper candles
to keep the amateurs away.

I am cold blooded
by my nature and upbringing;
I keep a decent distance
between me and the world,
but the Winter Solstice
is almost upon us
and I am compelled
to touch the naked earth,
to stand within the curl of time
at least a few moments every year.

This year it comes
a week this monday
just ‘fore 2 AM my local time,
still the shank of evening
for an old man past his prime
who doesn't get much sleep
most fitful nights.

It is this time of year,
each year,
that I recall the gift
received unwanted,
of being shown the door
to all a living man
could hope to understand,
all that and more,
and still survive the knowing.

For what it's worth
in all this time
I've kept the promise made,
though not then fully understood
before I could awaken,
and lived as best I could
trying to return to life
more than I had already taken.

we always try to give back more than we take

funny, this time of year...the winter solstice...where sun is far away from earth, I am distant, yet still trying to get in touch and pull myself together

but I think I am failing.

This poem made me think, dear IceyOne

Magical, flowing words . . . reaching out . . . leaves one a little curious but satisfied all the same.

and still survive the knowing."

And perhaps so many times have asked "why"
because the knowing doesn't seem to change anything but they do say that if you keep something for seven years, you'll find a use for it. Maybe 7 lifetimes too, who knows?

Compliments of the season to you, dear icebox.

"before I could awaken,

trying to return to life

a noble goal and one we should all strive for.  Hugs!
