in the shadows

This rain
pouring down,
from a sullen angry Autumn sky
seems fresh and new,
and yet
it's true each particle,
the atoms,
every molecule,
was present at the birth of time.

I am no stranger
to the concept of living other lives;
I don't ask for your belief;
I simply stopped trying to deny
what slips at times
so easily before my eyes,
and sometimes
in those memories
lingers knowledge,
insight,
understanding
that belies beliefs held commonly
by those floating with me
in what only seems to be
an unending stream of life;
it is just unstated questions
suspended
timeless in this single drop today
that gave me pause,
reminding me
that I am but a passing shadow
on the surface of this world;
I could live
a thousand or ten thousand lives
and yet barely touch
the depth in this raindrop on my arm.

It is within the waters of the planet
life began;
some spark,
perhaps an alien
or some divine wind,
set upon the ark of time
the seeds of life to grow,
and somewhere
in a tiny drop rolling down my arm,
though it will merge and flow
scatter and evaporate
coalesce and grow
endlessly
throughout my measure of eternity,
there must be ways of knowing
all that I have never seen,
and when I am gone
it will still circulate
around this gritty ball we call a world,
and in its travels
it will know all of time
between life's creation
and its reconciliation
along the twisting paths
of knowing
in the lights of understanding.

icebox

This thought-filled poem makes me feel good...like all things are connected and forever...thank you for it. It rained here today too-- now I will think of it differently.

from one passing shadow to another: you just touched my heart and I wanted you to know

that I am but a passing shadow
on the surface of this world;
I could live

the entire poem was brilliant, heart wrenching...humble...kind...wholeheartidly honest...wonderful write. simply stunning.
