My Son
(with love for Jay on his birthday ...remembering)

You greet the problems
of the world with indifference.
Totally ingrossed in growing,
your elbows and knees are the brunt
of asphault's
bad jokes.

You believe
a bandage stops pain,
death to you is just
a mystery,
a catalyst for your questions,
the monsters of your dreams
are real.

"How did God make
the world?"
"If I bleed
will I die?"

Spindle legged boy
tripping over cracks
in the cement
with run-down sneakers
sun-drenched hair
the sea in your eyes.

Yes, I love you.
No, you will not
live forever.
---------
I wrote this in the 70's for my then young son...today is his birthday and he is no longer young.

Of course he's still young....of course he is. In your heart, where it really counts, he will always be young, and every other age.

He has such a young looking mother, how could he be that old?
Lovely poem, dear friend, may you stay forever young.

"May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young.

From Larry's "kids say the dardest things file"....my son was about six when
we were trying to teach him how to react to strangers........
"What if someone tried to force you into his car?, we asked.    He replied.
"Stop, drop, and roll."     Well, maybe that would work too!
Anyway, Martie, nice poem for your son.....mine is 22 now....(they grow up)

I have a 22 year old son and, though it's not his birthday, after reading this piece I'm going to go over and give him a little hug. Of course he'll cringe and wonder what's wrong with his old man, but he'll get over it. I must say that this little poem really hits home.

Thank you

I came back to re-visit this poem simply because it feels good.

When I buried my mother I remember wondering what it would have been like to have been raised by one.

Thank you for the insight.
