in the shadows

Nothing stirs this morning
except the wind;
the birds are hiding
and I would bet
the squirrels are sleeping late;
damn them,
for the ease of mind
they must be keeping for themselves.

Everyone's exhausted here
from shoveling the snow,
I don't sleep much,
so I'm looking out a window
waiting for the wind to change direction.

I've lived here long enough to know
when it begins to blow out of the North
the next storm starts;
I should make cocoa
and measure out the parts for biscuits
so there's food for when they awake.

In these quiet times
I can look across the years
without judgment
at all the other waiting moments
I've spent watching for life's storms,
listening for footsteps
or the shriek of flying shell,
or the oddly funny thump
before a mortar fell.

It is true,
that the past is another country
and I realize I don't live there anymore,
but there's value in remembering;
it's a simple means
of measuring my own progress
through each passing life,
of marking every door
in the hallways of my soul.

I'm doing the same just now, but without any storms -- weather storms, anyway....

Thanks for taking the many moments it takes to share one.

Good morning, icebox....it is good to pause and remember, in order to find your place again, I think.  Stay warm hug!

You are just an amazing writer and I loved this so much. (And can relate to those tired, sore muscles from shoveling!)

It's always interesting to hear of other's memories. Thank you.

Hugs, Marti

This is poetry with "body".
I like it.
I wish I could do it so well.
Thank you.
