P.J.’s Party

The stage is lit for P.J. Simon.
He stands in all his glory at the front door.
Take a bow, P.J. Isn’t the world watching?
The wind and the trees applaud in unison.
But where is the sun?

It’s late. P.J. trips over time and
Falls flat on his face. When he blinks and shakes it off,
The room is still empty. He shares the absence with silence:
His only friend, the most faithful of companions.
His bold posture melts into a stale slump. The smile
Is the last thing to leave his forgotten self.

The baron room stretches acres across.
P.J. imagines it full of life, how it
Should have been. And somewhere,
The sun rises without him.

The driveway remains
Empty. The house remains
Quiet. He walks hand in hand, with his faithful friend,
Into the darkness.
The snow and the ice mock the evening failure.
And the sky will weep for P.J.’s forgotten party.
