Their boots are strapped and their guns are slung, they bow down to the crown
The steel mesh hangs above their brow; a war is coming to town.
They kneel to knee, heads lowered to the priest who worships words
And the reporter who stands there sneering, making damn sure his lies are heard.
Meanwhile, we live our lives without a clue to what’s to come.
We stumble through the dark but lack a leader to show us Sun.
We’ll soon find out, but maybe too late, of this disease poised to attack.
But what we never knew, this damn cold’s been with us the whole way back.

So we called upon the Scientist and his mind of lore to convey,
But his cure came with a price, a cost too much, to our dismay.
Our next at hand was the Philosopher, whose knowledge was rich with life.
Yet his case led to more questions from which emerged certain strife.
Time was passed and wearing was our list and patience thin,
So we turned to the young Child whose greenness carried not a sin.
At first he seemed not up to the task of which at hand.
“This boy is brave and he will save us all with his command.”

The voice came from the rear of a confused, crying, crowd,
And they almost all dismissed the woman as asinine and loud.
But she stood her ground with a face that looked carved of solid stone.
She then repeated the phrase, now in a deep and ardent tone.
The crowd looked puzzled as one asked, “But of what do you mean?”
And her stone face melted as she shouted, “You’re ignorance is obscene!”
Disorder followed, and the crowd got up in one combined uproar,
And they tossed that woman on her ass and violently slammed the door.

Silence took the room except for a single, shallow sneeze.
The culprit sank, abashed for breaking the attempt to appease.
Then a voice arose from beneath the depths of skin:
“Stand tall and proud, good sir, you have no grounds for your chagrin.”
At first the heads turned, unsure of the clear sound’s origin,
Until eyes focused on the Child, who stood there with a grin.
“When one sees fear in sneezing, I must gather some doubt.
The fault’s not his, nor is it of the woman you just tossed out.”

It’s probably safe to say that left a positive impression.
After all, how could a child succumb to cruelty and oppression?
So we wasted no more time and let him assimilate his men.
They soon seemed fully ready to enter the Lion’s Den.
So he confidently led the men to the enemy’s quarters,
Until he turned and saw a million priests and sly reporters!
This was no ambush; they were all wearing the Child’s sign.
Was this a mirage or were his precious troops really malign?

The Child stood still, pondering where on Earth did he go wrong,
As the vicious crowd scattered about, their screams a mere work song.
But then he looked abroad to study where they really lie,
And his blue eyes widened as he saw what reached for the large sky.
It was his home, his town, a city that he knew in and around.
It was the target; it was his troops that were to burn it to the ground.
His head felt stiff with pain as the cold had caught him, too.
But when he sneezed, out came his youth, which fell and lie astrew.

We heard the booms and thought, “we got ourselves in quite a hole.”
The remaining time we ran, until placid was not a soul.
The only being still at rest was like a statue in his ease.
The Child stood, bewildered, ‘till he fell down to his knees.
And tears streamed down his cheeks, but he couldn’t say a word,
‘Cause when his people spoke, he let not their words be heard.
“We’d follow him to the ends of Earth,” is what we said about the kid.
We’ll eat our words all the way to death, ‘cause that’s just what he did.

I would rather have one breath of his hair,
one kiss of his mouth,
one touch of his hand
than an eternity without it.
