Laying on my side at the bottom of this well. It is raining above as the water drips down the cold black granite. It is lightening above, but its brlliancy does not reach this low. The only light found as I close my eyes and see the warm glow upon my face of long ago...

Impatiently waiting waiting for the deli to bring our sandwiches. The hotel bus will be there any second, but I had to stop here to get, just, the sandwich she wanted. I thru my drachmas across the counter and grabbed the bag, running out the door. I sped around the corner and saw the little hotel bus pulling out. I caught it, banging on the side as it drove off leaving me behind on the polluted Athenian avenue. My rage for the driver's negligence, and own self hatred for not being there 30 seconds earlier drove me into a gape as I trudged up the street almost at a run.

I had already walked 4 miles from the side of the Acropolis. I was, taking pictures at sunset, sneaking up the hill and jumping the fence to sit at the Dyonisium Theater built some 3000 years before my arrival. I had wound my way thru the Agora stopping to look at jewelry and trinkets that might please her. Those were my only thoughts, it's what drove me up the 7 miles I had to walk. I had not enough for a taxi and I thought of how appreciative she would be to hear of my trek to run back to her with the slightly toasted sandwich. I stopped at a kiosk for sprite and chips, and ran on. I remember the joy I held in my heart, just at the thought of pleasing her. It was the source of my happiness, a true joy of fufillment, ignoring the physical pain. I ran up the steps of the hotel, past the cascading waterfountain to the tiny creaky elevator. Unlocking the door I walked in, seeing her laying on the bed. She looked up from her writing and smiled.
