in the shadows

There's no time like the present,
wrapped around the razor's edge of reason,
to soak in life's steeped waters
resenting my mortality
and the need to see things through.
I am not you,
we have no doubt argued that point
bedazzled and belabored
until it be forever blunted
on the simple rocks of logic's truth,
nor would I ever want to be
you carrying each season
as a raft of obligations;
each life is just a way station
where many paths can cross
and all paths lead away
and all paths bend around
and back one day;
five decades after leaving home
it's still the only place I haven't gone
and found,
or built from karmic boards
left lying ‘round,
or stones of my lives' guilt;
three steps forward
some steps back,
trying to remind my soul
that it could fly,
it's the humanity I lack
that lets me watch,
dispassionate,
as those around me die;
many heroes I have known,
men and women
who have shown me how
in images so crisp and clean,
so perfectly undone,
to face whatever is the greatest fear
and not stand down.
I like to think
I've done the same,
yet the game
whether lost or won
is only scored by the survivors
who, by living,
have invested in illusion.

Love the last line "yet the game
whether lost or won
is only scored by the survivors
who, by living,
have invested in illusion. "

How bitingly true.

Hello icebox,
First I am new to the site and most of the poetry sites I have found have little or no activity. This one however, is amazing!
I have read some of your poems and I am impressed with your work. The way the poem
begins.....the body...and than the ending
all leave me illusioned! Many thoughts were awakened in me thinking about the game of life and how we play we! You seem to bring
wisdom into your poetry!

Both truth and illusion have a way of making me feel bad and good at the same time, makes me feel relaxed and nervous at the same time...I like poems that are dualistic in that sense....this is one of them.

You took my early morning reflections of past transgressions and errors of judgement in quite another direction with this piece.

Thanks...

Superb writing.
