five of us
did not give thanks
five of us just did our time
going through the motions of
seven in remembered eye
there were times
when no one spoke
interrupted by a joke
that never garnered smile--

five of us
is all that's left
brokerage
to be the next
silence
humbling our breath
wishing we could stay awhile
as we wish ourselves away...

"five of us

Which is why I rarely go 'home for the holidays'.

losses are painful. i'm lucky to have never suffered a death in the family but if i had i would prolly feel like this aroung the holidays. great write, but remember: use these times to remember your loved ones fondly. Of course you can do whatever you want when you channel your pain into a poem like that.

This write really hit home, Karen. You have me pondering deeply with this. I will make an extra effort to appreciate Christmas and the persons still present around the table this coming year. Thank you for that.

Best wishes and hugs,
/Kit

My sweet friend, holidays can be so painful
sometimes, can't they? I sure did miss my daughter,
but I do know where she is....even if she is
thousands of miles away from me.
Heart hugs to you, K
