Kept on a tray to eat mulberry leaves
tales of a worm whose threads attracted thieves,
who smuggled cocoons into the west
that echoed a pinnacle of sericulture at its best.

Stored under the wig of an Asian princess
or carried in staff cores, well recessed
they travelled to new markets under disguise
contibuted to a demand that spread worldwide

Five to seven filaments from a cocoon makes a thread
Imagine the quanity of silk to embroider a bed;
of a once venerated secret and secretion of the Bombyx moth
whose larvae would produce the filaments found in that cloth
Can we learn from the story of Bombyx cocoons on the silkroad to the west
will globalization quash our ability to keep secrets from the rest?

There aren't any secrets left, and they never were really ours to keep anyway.
Thanks for an interesting write, Martin!

Wow, ecrivan...

Who would have thought such a great verse could come from such an unassuming little worm!  Full of nice imagery and fun facts. Thank you.
