Violet

Violet, your face so long ago lost in a bottle of gin
Fancy furs of ermine cling to your emaciated form
Hearken to days of yore ere beauty fled in dire defeat
Violet, your once proud chin still held high.

Violet, the shutters of your eyes painted in silhouette
Belie the glorious life you live over in memories well lit
The glory and fame turned to despondency and shame
Violet, and yet, you cannot recall the change.

Violet, people staring, speaking whispers of your
Borrowing and returning; trying, never buying
Violating village rules of proper behavior and decorum
Violet, your soul so long ago lost in a bottle of gin.

A very touching and sorrowful portrait.  My former spouse was an alcoholic.  He passed last year due to complications of his disease at the age of 47.  When he wasn't drinking, he was the most caring person...and when he was drinking (which was most of the time)well...  Though we parted ways many years ago, in his last months of life, we communicated by phone many times.  I keep in my memory those moments when he wasn't drinking...

Thanks for bringing his memory to mind this Thanksgiving morning.
