VI.  Graveside Phophecy

“Night settles in cicada’s hymn
as bourdon reverie,
ten-thousand notes of sorrow hang
in recital without key”

                                A wiser man

.

I sat down at the edge of the clearing
leaned back against hard, cold stone
and sipped the bottle of whiskey
through what was left of the night.

I listened to the shovel,
it’s shrill scrape against dirt and rock
settling into a rhythm that along with the booze
lulled me towards a precipice
that a wiser man would not have tempted

a wiser man,
would not have needed to hear
an echo that held no comfort
in it’s company

but I
have never been wise.

That is how I came to lie down
with regret

making no effort
to loose her claws
from around me

not brave,
only numb enough
to entertain the sound of her voice
and believe I would survive.

I saw
the days, the moments
as empty,
by sole virtue
of their transience

I heard their brevity
become my voice
and my voice
become my own

I knew love
and felt the loss of it
I determined
the pain too great.

I recognized myself
in an instant of regret

and screamed for her voice to soothe me.

.

.

VII.  Tellin’ Stories

Most the times Iambe and I talked
we were drinking something highly flammable,
and more times than not
the three of us made for some good conversation,
least until the shooting started.

There was an old cane rocker
on Iambe’s porch, that I’d never seen anyone sit in
but her.
It held the imprint
of her back and her shoulders,
and sometimes, before the booze set in
too thick,
I’d watch as she eased into the comfort
of that chair and I swear,
I could see her dream.

Made the mistake
once
of telling her so,
after the booze set in too thick,
that was how the shooting started that night.

Never saw a girl handle a gun
quite like that.

Never care to again.

But most the time
we just sat
and talked.

She told me her stories,
I told her mine.

Both taking as much liberty
with fact
as the mood struck us...
knowing the story
was more in the tellin’
than the details.

Great stuff here, wise and true...
transforming conception into a tangible work of art with some time and very littel effort

I liked....

Definitely my hero, that is for sure.  This I will read many, many more times.

Let there be peace on earth,
and let it begin with me.
