Appraising Apparitions [Konrad decides…]

Iambe haunted him now, taunting him to what he would find
if he would only get back to business
as she sweated truth of the matter out of,
and into his night-dreams.

He was tired of waking to screams,
especially when his own, never sure if he was screaming from,
or to, those visions Iambe seemed to draw forth.

He only knew he wouldn’t talk
much the next day, so raw was his throat.

Dillon observed, worry frowning new lines, unable to settle him,
her food not being any cure for his troubled soul.

She found him sitting on the edge of the old trough,
sifting dirt as if it were sand,
almost as if he were counting grains of time,
trickling slowly through his long, lean appendages.

She tried her best to tease him into the man she remembered.

He couldn’t face her when she would tear up,
him, knowing she wasn’t Iambe.
Jake tolerated having him around, for now,
finally realizing that blood is still thicker than death.
Even if only, half-blood, the brood of Jake’s eyes holding truth.

Konrad knew he could try to explain the dreams,
this incessant pull to return to sands of Yucatan,
even though Dana was gone.  He had hoped, but he knew.
The only reason to return now would be to dig up answers
to so many unanswered mysteries, so many things
left unresolved.

Like reasons he felt part of, although still an outsider to his family;
why he could not be  a resilient and strong brother to Jake,
only a dreamer and writer; why he felt he was the only one
who had understood Iambe ~
while Jake could only be, if she allowed it, her champion.

Like reasons he sensed he could not
lift his eyes to the questioning gaze of Dillon.
Why he felt he could never quiet her worry.

~*~

Konrad stood up from the trough, faced Dillon,
who had been standing there, her hand going through
his hair, as if he were youngest, needing comfort…

“I need to go back.  It’s time.”

Dillon’s huge eyes carried tears well, for moments at a time,
before they fell carrying her hurt down her cheeks,
blotching huge marks on  denim shirt embroidered with red carnations.

“Don’t go yet, Konnie, please.” Dillon’s voice, thin in want.

Konrad’s eyes grayed in mists of time
as they spoke to Dillon more than he knew,
as she watched them dilate, pupils almost disappearing,
inward, shrinking, while a cold fog seeped into her own bones,

“I need to know, Dill.  It’s time.”

She took his hand, brought it to her lips, and kissed it.

“Find what you can, Konnie.  It’s time the truth came out.”

He bent to kiss his sister’s cheek, as the visage of
Jake came into view.

“Go on then.”  Stern, no heart, Jake spoke, his bearing hard, his boots
crunching gravel. “Go on, if you have to.
But write.”

Konrad heard the sound of acceptance, hidden, and almost smiled.
Iambe held back the slight lift.

“I will.”

~*~

Galveston’s gulls called welcome,
Hurry aboard,
and the freighter lifted anchor,
bearing foodstuffs for the Yucatan,
which the tourists would desire.

I had a dream last night
you came to me on silver wings of light
I flew away with you in painted sky
Was it real
Is it what you see, touch or feel

Every single time I read one of the longer poems here, I end up asking myself, "Why don't I read more long stuff?" Every single time.......

Except once. I do remember one I regretted reading.... but it was just the exception that proves the rule.

Yep, I know the feeling.

Ok, now here we go BACK to Yucatan.  You're torturing me, ya know that?
Think Konnie might get lucky and hop a fast boat this time???

Lauren, you're flying?  I'm driving...down to Houston for a couple of days, then Galveston...then board the boat that will take me, hopefully, on a search to make sure Konrad finds the answers he's looking for...

and then again, who knows?

Ed, what a wonderful comment.  Thank you.  I know long poetry, whether metered rhyme or a poetic story in free verse that's gone amuck, is not always easy to follow.  I certainly appreciate, more than you might realize, those who keep up with Konrad and his journeys...

JanetMarie, I'll see what I can do about getting Konrad to take a photo or two.  You know how SHY he is.  I'll make sure I don't make any demands, perhaps tease him into it...y'know?

Enchantress...I can't wait to find out, myself.  It's been a long time since I've vacationed...and a longer time since I've gone on a mystery trip...which I feel more and more, this is just what it is going to turn out to be!

Dunc...the boat arrives in Merida in less than a week...good friends who have friends there are planning private tours; then on to Cozumel...then Belize...and you think I'M the one torturing YOU????

I hope EVERYONE has a LONG Thanksgiving weekend....

'cause I want to stretch EVERY minute tighter than polyester slacks after turkey!!!!
