I hate the holidays;
the bitter taste
of false camaraderie,
the rosy shine
of anaesthetic dinner wine
always accompanying
someone's chestnuts
roasting on the coals
of this season's satirical contempt,
the cosy sense
of lying,
about the obvious
or perhaps about some fake
indulgence of divine belief;
I know I can steel myself
to go through this again
but I do so want it all to end;
I am tired of the sham
and scam
and show of it,
the feral flow
of churlish greed
all wrapped and bowed
in the artificial glow of it.

This is well-constructed. You have an effective use of language, and a good flow.  And I totally disagree with everything you say, but you probably knew that already. I love the holidays, I love to have family gather around and I love the visiting and happiness.

Icebox, I'm with you all the way on this one, but you had the guts to say it. We'll be outnumbered, that's for sure.  I avoid the glitz and the first and last great deal at the mall, etc.  What I do appreciate in the darkness of winter is the extra time off work and school that my family members get, enabling us to get together and reconnect...to share who we are and the beliefs we hold dear all through the year, all through our lives....no matter the date.  ~K~

Holidays are what they are, and people are what they are....just part of the world, you know. Nothing we can do to change the normals into what we are. Hopefully nothing will come along to turn us into them, either. Among them are folks who believe, follow, and rejoice in the season, and they're altogether admirable.

Thanks all!

Yeah, I know I was just feeling cranky.  It happens every year.  I do even get out to a Mall usually, but I will do it closer to the mob madness time.  To me, the Malls at Christmas really are the caves of the dream merchants.

I guess it is just in me that these holidays always leave me empty.

I do hope you all enjoy them, and that Jimmy Stewart blesses you all, each and every one.   ))

Yup, same for me.... by the time I was out of high school, I had already named it my Christmas Depression....
