He won’t be hailed a hero when he comes home.
Few will know what it is he has done out there
For truly I really don’t understand the technical part of it all
All I know is my love, my best friend had to leave
And now he sleeps in tents in a country ravaged by violence
Gunfire and bombs a part of his daily existence
But he is not a warrior.
He is not a soldier and will not be recognized as one
No one will ever thank him for supporting our country
Some even look at us as though we chose this
My husband is a contractor…and in that word
It seems his sacrifice is diminished.
He faces the same dangers as our soldiers
Yet he meets the challenge without weapons
He comes to war with tools in a belt
Little help against those who see Americans and hate us
He sleeps on a cot with too few blankets
And eats meals that don’t satisfy him
I know he craves chocolate milk.
Yet in my eyes he is a hero although I am biased
But this man I love so did volunteer
I asked him why before he left
My eyes filled with tears
He replied that what he knows will keep our hero’s safe.
My husband is a contractor…starting out in a new job
Trying to prove his worth from knowledge he gained
When he did serve our country in a time of peace
He repairs equipment that allows communication amongst the troops
He installs wires and cables that keep our security secret
He sleeps in tents and spends his birthday alone
Thanksgiving alone
Christmas alone
And no one will hail him a hero
Or ever mutter a thank you
Yet when I mention this to him…this man I love
He says to me that every soldier that comes home safe
Is thank you enough
And he tells me he is thankful he can be there to allow them
To do their job
My hero.

Let my words fall first upon deaf ears before a closed mind...
