Far Away Enough to Send (Almost)

Ever think back to the seventies?
Once or twice I have, envisioning
this collage of moods and memories.
Time has finally distanced
my inabilities to share.
I thought you might enjoy this;
wanted you to know
all those years I cared.

Car washes and hayrides,
piano keys and genealogies.
You whittled a green twig in shape of S,
then handed it to me for inspection.
I placed it upon your chest.
Superman you were to me.
Strong, but humble. Yes.

In your frig there’d always be
a homemade apple pie,
jelly made from collected mint,
real butter, fresh milk, and cheese.
Remember his eggplant ptarmigan
cooked especially for you and me
and pig roasts, with Buttons, you, and Steve?

I have collages of memories
of cookie baking and happy making.
I guess I always will.
My fondest are your impish green
hide-and-seeking eyes, peeking
from the cellar to catch me in surprise.
Could we ever forget climbing the tall blue
silos to steal kisses against the sky?

Each time you were late,
tired, and just could not gener-
ate enough energy to come see me,
it killed my soul a little more
until I felt almost soulless,
completely poor.
I had to break off
or become completely broken.

Even so, for years I suffered
a dislocated soul.
Had I been more patient,
I wonder what would have been.
But that was that and this is now.
FYI, I’m finally happy, and you’re
far away
as time goes.

This is so true.... and I like the way you handled it better than the way I did at just the same time. Some excellent writing here, the imagery and movement couldn't be better.

Here's mine.... /pip/Forum82/HTML/003266.html

This one goes to my library, and I'll be looking for more of your work!

well done... very good sense of movement and of images.. woven into a story that holds the reader well, making them feel the memories as well as see them..

very nice work... I enjoyed!

been enough
to say thank you for your sharing.

This was a truly inventive write.  For a moment I was a 70's child. thank you for sharing these word with me and making me feel another era.

I remember the 70s, yet I was born in 69

the 80s were a blur

passing shadows,
I always felt you were very astute, AND now I find you were precocious at the very early age of one!  (The 80s were a blur to me, too --and come to think of it, the 90's, too!

Capt,
I couldn't believe ya stopped at my post and left your tracks!  I really appreciate your kind comments.  Poetry is work for me at this point, but this peace seemed to flow on its own.   Thanks again for stopping by...

Evocative,
It's good to meet again.   I'm glad you liked this one.  It had a lot of meaning to me.  Stop in again sometime.

Rani,
I'm glad this put you in the seventies.  Although it took place in the seventies, homemade butter, collected mint, etc. had
pretty well died down.  The seventies were more long hair, reflection, and adventure, at least in my eyes.
The setting of the poem took place on a family farm of long tradition.   At the time it took place, most of the family farms in this area and many other areas, had folded because new generations couldn't pay their
increased property taxes (increased by raised
land values due to suburbs extending toward the country.   Also, farmers couldn't make a living off the farm.  Sure, meat prices were high, but the farmer himself saw little of the money.)
Just had to add a little more history-hope you didn't mind...                          Sadie
