Never Question What You Are Not Ready To Accept

In most important ways
your life's a vast success;
yet increasingly details
of daily life are vexing,
causing stress.
You awake at times to tears
you can not understand
angry at the life you fought to keep;
from deep within your mind
I watch you sleep,
it is the sound that turns you
fitfully deprived of rest you need,
the sound you almost hear
but are too afraid to heed;
it is the whispered supplications
drifting amongst the shadows
that flicker from the patient shades
of possibilities,
of other lives;
unlike you I hear the laughter,
there really aren't any screams
streaming from
the souls of future children
waiting in the wings,
wandering at play,
patient and accepting
within the smoke and mirrors
of your greatest hopes and dreams;
that's why
your sleep sometimes brings
the cruelest fears,
and leaves you to awake
with bitter tears.

a telling passage that speaks to me on several levels...
