Spring of '42
and war in the air.
Young men lined up like sheep
before the shearing, waiting
for someone to hear the “I do”
and not looking for any “I
don’t” from the rose colored
faces blotched by stubble
of an Eighteen year old...

Nervous to the core, each and
every one.  Standing there with
nothing but a pair of shorts and
dignity between them and the
door that always squeaked.

Little did they know, could have
known that shadows would replace
so many faces over the coming
months and years.   White thumbs
all in a row...there upon that solemn
hill.

Juke boxes playing tunes that would
carry through memory into a hell ground
where tracers would light the night, as
screams tried to drown out the trickle
of blood and sweat from a Medic’s
face, feverishly attempting to grasp a
departing soul, yank it back...stealing
death away once more.

Some knew love upon the meadows as
others fumbled in speech, trying to find
that moment which would culminate
a moment of intimacy and maybe an
extra letter or two from home....with
the faint smell of that evening lingering
in a sniff that seemed to never end.

Buses, trains...never empty, carrying faces
that stared back into the world.....Tears
falling in silence as thoughts of Mom
lingered heavily on young hearts....

Yes,   Spring brought many flowers in ‘42,
Planted on a window’s sill.....

A gift...to be given....when that bus returned,
someday.

'42  was before my years but each war  brings the same feelings of hope and dread at the same time.

My Dad was one of those boys... and from the little he'll tell, you've told their story well. *S*

Riveting read.  Thank you for your heart-felt imagery.  It paints the emotions of such times so very well.

A poignant write, magnus. Especially:

dusty fields of nothing
extending far beyond
the human imagination
lie
awaiting a glimpse
fresh blood
and honor
bestowed upon them all

young, oh so young

sight temporarily clothed
with black of youth
football and women
they didn't know
they were not informed
that this day
time
and place

this very hour

would be their lifetime

Thank you Barry
