Walking through a free
art gallery; I had been
here before, months
prior, and the weight of
memory's poverty struck me
with awe, crept upon me.

See, its this: we remember
so very very little
of our past, it is so dark
What made me think this? For
a moment, I had a true memory
of the visit I had made before,
by concentrating stubbornly
on a picture. Then when

the spiderweb of feeling
and thought and image (and smell?)
had gone (so fast), the contrast
was bitter to see.

Between that flash
and what we call 'memory'.

I looked in the 'sign
your name' book, and saw our names
in it, and the drizzles of february
seemed a metaphysical stain
in this page. So long ago,
I was there, yet I'm not there now:
and I can never get it back,
save through the Glimpses.

With them, I am in the past.

I like the last line, it sort of sums up the way museums and art galleries are filled with dead things that breathe.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown
