Inside the shadow's shadow

0 posted 2003-11-01 10:09 PM

Today was a good day
I went with mum and got the car fixed
And did schoolwork
On a weekend.
Drank cappucino from the machine-
Ignored the icky spurting.
(Like the squirts
Ya know?)

Next we went and got some flowers
For the grandma that ain't mine.
And then went on to RK News
A semi-christian bookstore.

I searched and searched
Up and down the aisles
for my book "The Art of Faery"...
The e-mail said it was now out
But RKN must not have got it.

So onto old McDonald's
For nuggets, sweet and sour
(They're the only thing I like there...
The rest gives me...Ya know...
the squirts...)

And into Barnes and Noble,
Searching for my beloved book
Spent most my time in the New Age section
On the ground
Next to a lady on her phone.

Defeated, hope deflated,
I saw a book on Dylan,
And drifted to that section
But never got to read about him.

Something else had caught my eye
A big black book with small red font
The upraised words were startling...
Kurt Cobain Journals

I nearly cried, I'm not sure why
I'm never sure these days,
But tore through the crowd, all teary-eyed,
To find the Money Mum.

I already spent my damned allowence
On a CD this Friday,
And 25 bucks was out of reach...
But Mum just got her paycheck }

"Mummy, won't you please buy me
This book 'bout Kurt Cobain,
I'll pay you back after Christmas ends
And love you crazy-insane!"

Relucant, like she always is,
She moved into the check-out,
And I read some Edgar Poe,
While eyeing my new, beat-up book.

The man tells mum he hasn't seen
That book for a long time,
And that we're lucky we have found it,
Despite the way it's ruined.

And on we go to blue Best Buy
To look at the soon to be mine
Scanner sitting prettily
Upon the ugly shelves.

Mummy's happy it's not too much
And I'm surprised it's that much at all,
But she promises me it's mine for Christmas,
And I smile and thank her profusely.

And onto find some greasy dinner-
Steak N Shake it is.
I have a big ol' chicken salad...
That's now sitting in my fridge.

And mummy, can we please go home now
I didn't get much sleep
Last night or the night before that night,
Or the one before that either.

And so we finally go home,
Where I crawl into my bubble
And finally allow the tears
To flow upon my pillow.

But...
Today was a good day.

i cried for Kurt, too. the genius who swept away all these 80' hair, lip-stick "Poison" bands. hm, did you talk about Bob Dylan or Dylan Thomas (both are great)...

"the Money Mum"

Oh I wear that title very well...

This reminded me of the Saturdays my daughter and I have gone shopping...wonderful..

I enjoyed this day-in-the-life-of-Koko !
An authentic Saturday scenario that is most-likely identifiable by many of your readers.
I recall days such as this! ~ as both the teenager and the mother!
