pain wrote the parentheses
centering the eyes
a ginger bend of testing knees
white knuckles grasping all his pride
ignoring my astute attest
of ankled hobbling--he rose--
triumphant in the stand.

A simple sack of gravity
sometimes years lack balances
pain wrote the parentheses
so I grabbed a magazine
grazing in the land of dream
I watched him snatch some dignity
from the corner of my eye.

His hand was trembling dismay
so again, I looked away.
I read the placard on the wall
for the umpteenth time that day
silent as he paid his bill
standing there so tall...

pain wrote the parentheses
tears dug rivers boasting pride
love created canyon cheeks--
it happens when you smile that wide--
bouncing babies on a knee
holding that dear hand of crepe
planting seeds from yesterday
arms eager for the grasp of life.

I watched him wobble on his cane
never looking back at me--
framing me
my disbelief
wagging a fine finger's breath:

"pain is just parentheses--
all the inbetween is death."

Karen...Your words need to be framed and hung on a wall, they are so touching and beautiful. Loved the pictures behind the words...Paul

you photographer you

but
what if he had held your face
in his two hands?

then your last statement
wouldn't be true....smile

living words you make
incredible
