Oil Painting

It was hot that autumn.
Her clothing stuck to her body,
and the air felt solid.
She thought I was eating bites of it,
until there wasn’t enough to breathe;
certainly not enough for the pains
that tore into her
and made her scream,
then plant me into the antiseptic
white dirt of the maternity room.

She, cinched at the waist, a flowered dress,
and a bow in hair, I’ve seen the photo.
Even a nurse all properly white and holding me.
I’ll be back in a week after resting, dearest baby,
she swooned up the stairs, the heat tracking
her dry fingers across her face,
where she drew a line with oils.

I sit here, reading your offerings
line after line,
then read again,
sometimes getting the same picture,
sometimes seeing it waver beneath my gaze,

and I think you are then related
to Dr. Mesmer...

Sigh.

Teach me.

Then tell me how you're coming along!

Beautiful write Martie,  I am trying to
come up with who the characters are, not
sure....but that is your mystique that
intrigues and captivates....isn't it?

You capture the drama, the reality of the scene, so simply. Your imagery always seems perfect to catch the moment and show the deeper levels at the same time. Marvelous writing here, Martie! I'm going to study this one, so that maybe I can come to understand more about how you do it.

Mother giving birth, and then the picture afterward of her holding you. Baby pictures of me and my sons came to mind. Brought back lots of memories. Thanks for taking me back.

yes yes I saw that right away
at first I thought you meant you
but no . . .
what a beautiful entrance
sincerely
and this:

She thought I was eating bites of it,
until there wasn’t enough to breathe;

lunged out from the page itself
grabbing hold of my throat

My God you are brilliant
