Thistles and thorns line the way, winding
skyward into shadows growing ever longer
as daylight fades into the darkness that
patiently waits it’s call.

Quietly walking, the hammering heart signaling
fear, panic bursting at the seams of a chest
gulping for air, stifling a scream.

The beam of a fading light wavering, searching
the shadows for glowing eyes, eyes that stare
and blink, and then....
disappear
as a twig breaks...

Turning swiftly, trying to catch the feel of
what brings the hackles to rise, finding
only still damp air.

A simple cabin, somewhere ahead, beyond
the fog that grows steadily, rising like
a specter from the tomb of earth, cold to
the touch of skin.

Listen.....hear the whispers of dark souls.
Hear the call of beast and fowl. Heed
the howling winds beyond the summit
high...

For on this night of fear and dread, of
drooling maws.....of things now dead
a scream shall fall upon the ears,
a curdling sound from now past years.

And when the moon does crest the peak,
the strong shall pounce the frail and weak.
The earth shall crawl, the ground shall shake
and fear shall come in shivering quake...

you do remind of my best friend...
But he is poetic because of the overwhelming pain, and the hopeless love he has.
I hope that isn't what brings you to this melancholy beauty.

Loved it, always do.
Always, Alyssa

Allysa,

Though I am a hopeless romantic...it is
not that which draws me here among the
flowers and trees and so much more...

It is you,  all of you,  that draw me
here...

Very much enjoyed Barry...loved the thought of the earth crawling.

I am saving this one for CP (my daughter, Chelsea).  She is at her friend's house this eve.  This is wonderful, Barry...the images, the flow.  I closed my eyes after certain lines to let the image settle in my mind.

Now a story evoked by your Poe spirit. I  will try keep it brief.

I knew a woman several years ago.  She was a poet...had her Masters Degree in English.  This was long before I thought about writing again.  She took me to a local coffee house where the poet's recite...a sort of bizarre place, decorated in 1960's psychadelia.  Anyway, she was at one point, well, a bit insane...not just my opinion, either.  She spent a little time in lock down.  Anyway, she had her 6 year old son memorize some of Poe's work and recite it when he went trick or treating.  Where did this come from, you ask.  Who knows?  I just thought you would enjoy this little story.  Plus, I have been taking care of a 4 year old with the flu...I am a bit stir crazy, too. LOL

Love the work and am keeping it to read to CP.

Pat,  I have written a few Poe style poems
that I posted about a year or so ago.  I
will try to find one or two that CP can read
and get a chuckle from...I am sure you will
also...

Thanx always for your warm review....makes
an old man's heart swell...

Reminded me of Poe as well...

Scary and at the same time, exciting...

It can be that way -- is that way sometimes, and it doesn't take a holiday to produce it.
