in the shadows

Who am I ?
Who are you
to ask this question?
Perhaps a friend,
perhaps without malice,
I am sure
you speculate
in innocence and pure curiosity.
I am no one now,
and many years before
I was certainly no one
you would ever want to know.
I'm not famous,
never was,
I'm just a name lost to history;
I was at times the one who put the mist
in mystery,
the player
of a hand you'd never try;
I was the shadow without source
troubling the eye,
because reflecting
you might say I was the how,
when the real question
should have dealt with why.

I live quietly now,
the only paddle stirring water in my life
is perhaps my poetry
but there was a time
as old men say,
"...why you should have known me
in the day...."
Well,
I won't even tell you that,
any sane person ran away;
I was fire
into which others threw the fat,
I was the edge
upon the bloody blade,
the solution finely paid
for decisions made by pampered suits
afraid their hands could have gotten stained,
the gardener cleaning out the beds
after it has rained,
tearing errant weeds out
by the roots,
I was the lightening
of the distant gun,
when wide eyes stared
in disbelief,
I was the one
who'd brought their plans to grief
and disappeared
smoke in the wind,
cleared quickly
to let some exalted change begin.
I was the string
that made the puppet dance,
the shooter
when the die was cast,
the sting
felt only at the last,
the catalyst
changing lead to treasure,
the valve eliminating chance
when politics were heated under pressure.

ah but we are all "someone" and that someone is not totally defined by what we were...but what we are today...and what we would not share..and of what we would..

enjoyed the read Ice... and the thoughts it brought to mind..

enjoyed this read very much and at times lately have asked myself that very same question and haven't exactly found the answer yet...who am I?
much to ponder in your words, well done.

"I live quietly now,

I for one am very glad about what those lines up yonder say...

As for the rest?  lol seems to me we all have ghosts, sometimes ghosts that are repugnant to "normal" society...what the heck do they know? As your title implies we are who we are today...
I know I get excited when I see your name on the board with a new piece...

Love you Icy one!

It's a bold and necessary question to ask. At one level I'm chagrined that I have almost no answer to it -- and no almost no question.

but there was a time
as old men say,
"...why you should have known me
in the day...."

A beautiful young lady with whom I could have -- and maybe should have, but didn't -- begun a romance once asked me, "Ed, have you ever done anything bad in your entire life?"

"No," I said, with a tinge of shame.

"I Am Only Who I Am Today" ~ and that is saying a whole lot, Dear Box of Ice!

I have respect for your writing ability--and for the man who pushes the pencil!

You are who you are!--and that's a good thing!
