(AN: This is a continuation of several poems I've written in the Corner Pub section. You can still access them through Smart Search. The poem To My Lili Marlene tells my story most thoroughly...The muse of this is someone I care for who doesn't share my feelings, but she is still a good friend.)

(The Song referred to is Lili Marlene. Lyrics and beat are at this link: http://www.openface.ca/~dstephen/marlene.htm)

Ode to Lili of the Lamplight

What caused me to fall for you?
I can answer it in my dreams true.
It wasn't merely physical beauty.
God knows, I've known many with outer beauty.
Who were truly ugly within.
Your kind personality always made me grin.
It was December when the last barrier fell.
When my heart told my fears to go to hell.

Though your heart belongs to another.
And I endure pain like none other.
Your care and kindness have touched my heart.
Hope from your circle of friends, I shant depart.
If your heart goes to him.
I respect that decision, circumstance is grim.
You'll always hold a special place in me.
Even if far and wide I must flee.

You befriended the lone campus stranger.
Heedless of any potential danger.
It helped me adjust to a new place I never yet saw.
Your beauty, outer and inner, masks any flaw.
Your heart is pure and kind.
They say that love is blind.
That's when I fell for you, my Lili Marlene.
Since September was I in such deep pain.

It is at the worst at night.
Where by electrical and star and moonlight.
I feel the lonely pangs of unrequited love.
I pray for strength from God above.
You know nothing how I feel.
For I fear a shoulder cold as steel.
Turned my way, for feelings I have inside.
They are ones I must hide.

If I hope to retain our friendship.
It cannot freely slip.
Though it will test my strength to see you and him.
I clench my jaw against odds so grim.
Every smile, every kind word will soothe and calm.
Like from Gilead a special balm.
You bring joy to those around you, a shining light.
My Lili of the Lamplight.

To me you're friendship I'll always treasure.
Trading to God my pain for your pleasure.
You said you're lucky to have a friend like me.
When I heard that my heart felt set free.
Your warmth and kindness scaled the walls of Troy.
For once I thought that love's joy.
Was within my grasp at long last.
Unlike the grim history of Love Past.

I placed wall and moat around my heart.
Your friendship tore them apart.
I let myself love again.
And now I suffer familiar pain again.
Wine from an ancient vintage.
Shall I exit your life from left or right stage.
Your friendship and compassion are a star bright.
This I dedicate to you, Lili of the Lamplight.
