in the shadows

Morning comes with urgency,
always fifteen minutes
faster than I wanted it to be,
joints stiff from sins' wages
and the foolishness of sleep,
last night's drinks
telling me it's time they moved along,
a happy bird,
mindless at best,
sings the same six notes
repeatedly
as if it is the song of everyone's request,
the fast familiar cat
gamboling through the room
springboards off my hip,
claws out and through the sheet for traction
like I'm the Acapulco Cliffs,
digs in and pivots her release
to land balanced on three inches of sill,
(the judges give her 8.5 - one paw off the edge)
but still not within reach
of her genetic ancient prey,
frustrated beyond meows,
she flips back
her path re-traced,
landing on me
leaping off exactly the same way,
she races off to chase her brother
just to pick a fight
before he can run away.
I listen to them hiss and howl,
locked tumbling down the stairs;
mildly bewildered that I'm not really dead,
I guess I have to start my day.

icebox...this may not have made you smile when it happened, but it did me when reading about it.  Thanks for that!

If the cats don't get you
that bird will...

enjoyed this very descriptive,
image-filled writing, icebox...

thank you.

Ok, rewind and replace the cat with a great dane; it's best to jump up and let him out at his first request! A familiar morning indeed, and you write it well.
