now suppose this watchful nightmare
that you tend with mother's care
is polished bare with the wringing of your hands
and the battlefield familiar
stripped as seastones
trenches filled
stands bare and lonely
and the enemy has thrown off that humanity
which you yourself have striped it in
dispersed
it hovers weightless in the air
it seeps beneath the earth
to join others who wait in secret places
to grow

and then suppose a day comes when the sun
rises for everyone but you
and you walk the street
intuiting the steeltoothed traps
in sidewalk cracks
and death's spears on the churchtops
and ambush everywhere

suppose the outcome of this conflict
has already been constructed
of the bones that you have taken from your victims
to house you in

when you hide your eyes
and look back at the things
that shame you
