beyond the doors of perception

Zac was a client of mine when I worked in mental health.  He was horribly tormented by Paranoid Schizophrenia, to the point that he had demonic video hallucinations.  He died after walking away from the Montana State Hospital at Warm Springs.  The hospital did not put out a search for him, though it covered its' ass when they found his body six weeks later, after the snow melted.  I wrote this and presented it at his funeral.

With angels eyes
you saw beyond the veil -
Allowed by God to know more than we -
  Some called it schizophrenia
  Some called it spiritual warfare

You heard, you saw, and you knew -
  beyond our limited abilities
You brought to life a sense of wonder
An oh! How you yearned to be free

You walked gently, with dignity
  In sometimes overwhelming torment -
because you once said, “I cherish life”
And in your love for life you brought -
light and love and joy to those you touched

You were a dweller on the threshold
  never losing ground -
In spite of what some thought
  your vision was so profound
And brought to life through your gift for art

Your gift to me was trust and love
You said I made you feel safe -
Zac, you made me feel safe
Sometimes I called you “son”
  That wasn’t an accident
I loved you as my own

You, the gentle son
laid down your life in virgin fields
And crossed the bridge where angels dwell
To live under the watchful gaze of the Master’s eyes

Our loss is God’s gain,
  my son
Go to the Creator
with the love of many -
You will be in our hearts and minds
and I know you are safe

Thank you Zac
  for sharing your life
  your love
  and your spirit with me
You were God’s gift to me

Peace, Joe
