Wananikwe’s dream began the dance
To restore us to this land before they came
Before the disease of red pox
When Buffalo were our brothers,
But it was stolen from him
And lost its power
When he we never name
Crept into the sleep of our people
And stripped bare the tree it grew on.

This was before I caught he we never name
By following him into the nightmare
Of an old Sioux who thought Coyote
Was playing tricks with his wife
While he slept.

Our people held on then
To the motions
But lost all else

Tonight,
I danced Wananike’s dance
And held the bag holding him we never name
High above my head
And ate the dreams he contained

Tomorrow,
The world will change
And the white eyes who have visited
So many tears on us will begin to feel
What it is to war and lose
Or war and win but lose
And a new cycle will begin on the wheel

One that brings the broken circle
Much despair.

I have spoken
And He we never name
Now hunts their sleep

Tell me great fathers
Why is it you cry?

reminiscent of Neil Youngs "Pocahontas."  Sadly lovely.  Ah ho, cousin
