beyond the doors of perception

The trees are trading
  for gold their green
As Canadian honkers
  create a languid scene
Instinctively preparing
  to journey south
As frost sprays forth from
  Mother Nature’s mouth
The reeds in the willows
  playing their tune
Harkening the arrival
  of winter soon
But first we fill
  our larders full
With antelope, deer
  and elk, a young bull
The hides to Kate
  for brain-tanned clothes
And a medicine bag
  to enrich our souls
Wild grape jellys
  and choke cherry jams
Produce from the garden
shoot that turkey before he scrams
Chop that wood, but no
  need to carry water
Though we’d do that too
  cuz’ work doesn’t matter
Sealing the windows
  readying the stove
So we’re warmly ensconced
  when the snows get drove
As the nights linger on
  into shortness of days
I am blessed each morn
to see the suns first rays
I sit on the hillside
  above the Yellowstone
With a sense of wonder
  I’ll never be alone
The awe I feel
  these magical days
Because of the love of the Creator
  and His mystical ways

Joe

I know living off the land could not have been easy, so much hard work went into it daily, but it must have been a grand feeling to know the accomplishment.  Thank you for this beautiful reminder.

Impending winter. I can't tell you how many pictures, or beautiful christmas cards that show the beautiful snow, and tree tips lurking with snow on their edges...this write brought that to mind. How beautiful it must be to see this with your own eyes. Where I am I have never seen snow that stayed on the ground for more than 30 or 40 mins. It rarely ever snowed here in my 47 years, and even when it did it would  melt as soon as it hit the ground. But once I saw it for about 30 or 40 minutes and it's the purest white I've ever seen. Loved reading this. Kind of had the batten down the hatches feel to it! Very nice to read. Thanks for sharing.
Love,
Terri~

may blessings abound around - literally and, literally ;-}  thank you for the kind responses.  It pleases me to be able to take a day of my life and share in a way that means something to others.  I wrote this on a day of rock (agate and petrified wood)hunting on the Yellostone (09-30-03)
