beyond the doors of perception

kinda' a follow up to Ringo's "Concrete Matress"

I grew up in the projects, then reform school and the streets until I was 18.  I used to feel guilty, then I got angry, now I just want people to know that it wasn't easy growing old before my time.  Now I'm younger than I've ever been.  Peace

A life defined by hatred and anger
lived on the edge of fear and danger
ready to abuse any stranger
with no thought given to the Manger

Blade in hand as a means of coping
that 12 year old crying and hoping
A throat got slashed as a means of developing
an aura and an attitude that ain't about moping

Hidden inside is a scared yound kid
He knows his folks won't look when he's hid
It's easier on them if he just gets rid
cuz' he'll sully their reps by the things he did

Raised with pain, trouble and strife
ripping and robbing and running rife
Sneaking and thieving and wielding a knife
he's gotta' have a way to defend his life

He finds safety in the Juvenile jail
The Delinquent hall, it don't allow no bail
The friends he finds are all hearty and hail
but the dope fiend persona is bound to fail

Comin' and goin' he ends up at home
but not by choice cuz' he don't belong
Lurking he smirks, "I won't be here long"
"Acually, if folks like you I wanna' take on"

Living night to day off the strangers he meets
Lou Reed talking about his defeats
Moments alone, his sad heart beats
Looking for love on Wild Side streets

Peace, Joe

Joe... Very touching poem. I can't imagine growing up the way you did.
Thanks for sharing. Here is a link to a poem I wrote about a young boy going bad. This is just a fictional story I made up in my mind, but yours is the truth. Thanks for sharing...Paul
