This
I wish I'd never seen
That
I could have done without
Grant me veils of vagary
if mercy be a bargaining
I'd prefer his scorn to this--

his eyes pitied me.

Pity? It's usually a mirror of the other's own soul. Rarely does the one being pitied need it. It's the one that casts the pity that needs pitying. They can not see their own innate sick need to feel they are above all others. It seems an act of compassion, but in reality it is taking on the place of judging another's worth.
Love,
Shara~

Well I don't know Shararose but I sure like her thinking as it is 100% correct!  The best part of this poem is knowing that it can turn around in a heartbeat!

Ahh, gentle one..Pity? Nay...for envy would be a better word, for not understanding is to try to show superiority, realizing not that the lack of understanding is a fault, not an attribute..so, yea..envy for wishing he could soar to your heights...very gentle smile

If he pitied you, than he doesn't know the wondrous woman you are.So much said in so little.

(big hugggssssssss) Oh, heck no, that one who cast the stone at that glass house is the one who needs to be pitied, for if people like him spent more time seeing the good in everyone and not judging books by covers or everything by critics, the world would be a much better place! (sad sigh) I send angel hugs your way, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karen, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
