Hanging On In The Breeze

I sit back, wondering about you,
if your heart strings are playing a tune,
one for me, a challenge if any,
the sorry of my day's well behind me.

I watched the butterflies yesterday,
doing their dance, hanging on in the breeze,
like me, the Fall warning them, that the chill
is on its way.

I ironed with caution, smoothing the wrinkles,
my thoughts in disarray, you and you and you
coming to mind, masking my pain,
with  words in comfort,
those of long ago.
Yet I hold onto their velvet touch,
and let the heat that rises
sooth the ache of impending loss.

I wait for the sky at dawn,
where meditation comes easily
and the sun plays on my skin
bringing me life and exploration.
It is then, that I begin to paint my picture
dipping in colors, hoping not to fade
from  those moments of peace
and joy to heal an injured heart
and steal away the words in front of me,
pretending they are belated gifts
that I deserve.

When I close my eyes,
I can make it all disappear, time...and more...
and spell myself to those unsaid words,
the ones that would have righted my world,
balancing my act so that you or you or you
would understand how well I do sew
and that the calicos that I print
make up my quilt that is walled and hanging
so that when I pass it by,
I may touch its lasting memories
and understand why I have titled it
"Hanging On In The Breeze."
