They say you're not cool anymore
Barry Manilow.
If you ever were.

Caught in the afterglow
of dead balladeers and not cool.

Not rapping or hip hopping
or even rock and rolling
clearly not country
not cool.

I write the songs you say
and you deserve a break today
just like a good neighbor
stuck on a Band-Aid...with b-o-l-o-g-n-a.

See...you've even got me rhyming,
something I never do
shame on you.....darn.

Ok...so you wrote commercial jingles
and a few commercial songs.
But I don't weekend in New England
never been to the Copa Cabana
nor met Lola.

But I named a little girl after one of your songs.
We danced together, same song, this summer
when she became a wife.

Tell me that's not cool.

for Mandy
who cried when she read it

Wow dude! You went beyond your own prejudice and... ah, hell, this almost brought a tear to my eye, as I was privileged to dance with my Aurelia.  Wow, again, and thanks.  Peace, Joe

yes...it's hard for us fathers......harder than I thought it would be,
even when I knew it was coming.    Thanks for the comment.

I know it's not cool to like Barry Manilow, but....shhhhh, I do!  I know this feeling, I danced with my son at his wedding to the same song I sang to him when he was a baby.  I enjoyed the humor and the tenderness in this!

(big hugggsssssss) I say......WHO CARES!!! Forget what critics say about Barry Manilow, Kenny G, or Hootie & The Blowfish, my philosophy is you either like it or you don't but don't center your life around critics as I believe everyone is special and Barry is just as good an adult contemporary artis, Kenny just as good a saxophonist, and Hootie & The Blowfish are truly a real band with heart and sincerity! (sigh) God Bless You and your family, sweet friend, this was so sweet for you to do for your little girl, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Larry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

It's SO cool...he played at a little bar in a town I use to live in...although I never got to saw him, when I would frequent that nightspot, I would imagine him there, under the spotlight...

I don't care if anyone throws tomatoes...he was, is and will continue to be a talented artist that will write songs I can appreciate!!!

Larry, this is just too awesome for words...
Barry Manilow actually wrote 2 of my favorite songs (although, being a good metal head, I would NEVER admit it to my boys) and Mandy is one of them. Then other you mentioned (Weekend in New England).
Keep up the great work.

If you like it, how can it not be good music?
Go for it.

Hi Larry, this was really nice, I really enjoyed it!

I was also a big Barry Manilow fan when I was younger too. Of course I couldn’t tell that to my friends at the time, for fear of being beat over the head, with a big stack of Lynyrd Skynyrd albums! As I’ve gotten older I haven’t listened to him that much, but I still think he’s tops!

I remember listening to “Barry Manilow Live.” Which was his greatest hits album of the time (later 70‘s). I remember the part where he does that medley of all the jingles he wrote, that we all grew up listening to. Like McDonalds, “You deserve a break today” and a whole bunch more. It’s funny how I also picked Mandy, as a name for a daughter!. I’m sure that the song was the biggest influence for that decision. But as it was, I had three sons.

Poor Richy Jr.’s middle name is Mandy...

Just kidding!

Poor old Barry too. At his peak, all us young fools wouldn’t give him his due respect. Although I wonder how many more of us, really actually enjoyed his music?

Larry I jumbled a couple more Barry tunes together below, that I hope, kind of capture that father, daughter connection...

And you know what too? Barry was cool, not trying to be cool. And so is admitting that you like something, that others don’t have the courage to admit themselves...

And, dancing with your daughter, on her wedding day. To the song that you named her after... well...

That’s really is, the coolest!

Congratulations Larry, to you, and your daughter Mandy and her husband!

My Best Regards,

Richy

Oh, and sorry I’m so wordy...

“I Am Your Child” “I Should Care” “I Don’t Want To Walk Without You”  “Can’t Smile Without You”

“Somewhere Down The Road” “Somewhere In The Night” “When I Need You” You Could Show Me” “The Old Songs”

And...

“If Tomorrow Never Comes” “Who Needs To Dream” “Looks Like We Made It”

“Even Now”

This is wonderful, Larry.

Yes...I admit it...I used to LOVE Barry Manilow..LOL.
I still like his music, but just don't listen to him like
I used to.  Back in the 70's, I listened to him a lot.
Of course, one of my favorites was always,
'I Write The Songs'...LOL...go figure.
He had so many great songs though...too many to name,
although Richy did a pretty good job there...LOL.

Anyway...as I said, this is a wonderful write,
and your love for your daughter shines through.
Very much enjoyed.
Hugs,
~Vicky

very cool I say! He did write some
amazing songs...and "Mandy" was one of
his best. The love you have for your
daughter shines so beautifully in this.
I wish you and her years and years of
love and happiness.
take care.
