She walked into my office, head bent down, shoulders stooped,
She twisted one long strand of hair, around her finger looped
Over and over, time and again, rote motions done when hurting,
‘May I talk to you,’ her soft voice spoke, her tone disconcerting.

She then sat down, this little girl, all of maybe twelve,
And asked me if I’d be so kind to take some time and delve
into her files and see if I could find her family
‘They surely wonder where I am, I know they must miss me.’

I knew her family history, her family was long gone,
so I began to talk to her of life and love withdrawn.
I told her then that sometimes life deals us a different hand,
and that things don’t always turn out quite the way we planned.

But here and now, the most important thing for her today,
Was to look toward her future, and to stop and pick a day.
Pick a day and say it’s the beginning of a life
decide things can’t come from behind to bring us stress and strife.

And this, she can perceive that day, a future free of pain,
a future where she's in control and no one else can reign
and hold full sway upon her life, for she has picked a day,
a day that she begins her life, and know that she's okay.

I’ll help her find a way to look ahead and not behind,
so she can see that brand new doors can open in her mind.
to walk forward, discover all the possibilities
that lie before her up ahead, I’ll help her find the keys.

Our system, although greatly flawed, has made accommodation
so ones like her that need some help can find their destination.
She has an opportunity, her education’s paid for,
the system will pick up the cost, new roads made to explore.

I’ll help her learn the skills she needs to make it on her own,
and help her get a job, the possibilities have grown
because she took control one day to make her own life’s way
and she can claim a victory because she picked a day.

~ and for her soul ~

As babies, we are helpless, depending on another,
to nurture and protect us, to love us like no other,
but those that we depend on can hurt us to the core,
And leave deep scars and furrows, despair we can’t ignore.

And there’s this fragile heart that was abused and so neglected,
The scars left there might be repaired, or at least protected
But some may linger longer, fear of pain is fierce and strong,
And she may question her equation of what’s right and wrong.

So as we look at things today and put them in perspective,
Some answers come more easily, others are introspective.
We go inside our soul and find that strength God gives to each
to search inside for remedies that lie within our reach.

Oh, I can help her get in school, all that of which I’ve spoken,
But I've no magic wand in sight to mend a heart that’s broken.
She must go deep inside herself and find her strength of mind
and find her path with God’s sweet grace and leave her pain behind.

So on this day, lets both decide that we indeed are blessed,
there are so many choices now, and may I just suggest
we think about the things we'd like to do now that we know
we've picked a day to plant a seed and watch our future grow.
