The day after she told me
she was having another man's baby,
I was awakened by pearls
springing from my eyes
and persistently rolling down my face.

Truly tiny pearls;
peering at the nearest mirror,
I picked several of the larger ones,
in wonder—and observed, almost as a scientist,
their tender-slippery texture, between my fingers.

They would, only, pop and liquify when
I squeezed them too hard—down my face they
persevered, by the dozens, and dozens, for twenty
minutes or more—the smaller ones would simply melt
before reaching my chin.

I could not stop gazing at those pearls—
"Hey, I must really love her for
this to happen," at one point, I concluded.

Patiently I oversaw the lustrous grieving subside;
only then did I sit on a chair to pray.

What have you been eating that you should cry tears that are pearls of pain, born of knowing.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown
