(This is dedicated to my hero, Philippe Ernewein, who too always believed in cowboys and indians. Heroes are never forgotten, and you will always have the soul and spirit of the Lone Ranger, as we are all born to chase the wind! )

Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
By: Noah Eaton
9/26/03

White iron hooves click-clatter, pitter-patter
Clickety-click slip-sliding swiftly across the untamed plain
Arabian lightning spreading vehement, gentle fire
And through the mighty sandstorm,
you can hear the hero's proud refrain...

Here no embezzler's havest can be reaped
Smoke signals and blind witnesses are discreet
The matter of courage is mesquite
God put the firewood there for you and me
And as we gather and light it ourselves
Still I see the masked man riding between heaven and hell
The Lone Ranger is out roaming wild and free
"Ta-i ke-mo sah-bee!"

Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Hey, hey!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Yippee Yi Yay!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Hey, hey!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Yippee Yi Yay!

I still believe to have a friend
You must be one to the end
We're destined to be born kind of low
But when our heroes are tall, we will grow
Everything will change but the Truth
And that truth is immortal between me and you
Drama is what makes a hero come alive
So on shiny spurs and Injun's runnin' let's ride...

Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Hey, hey!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Yippee Yi Yay!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Hey, hey!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Yippee Yi Yay!

Finders, keepers, losers, weepers
Rifles, renegades, jeepers creepers
High heels, low riders, tell-tales, street sweepers
Heritage of treason, no reasons, hide-and-seekers

We all can't be cowboys,
we can't all be indians
But all across the wild frontier
there are heroes within
Still I find on and on these silver bullets
Scattered along these secular myths,
golden trails and canyons
The Lone Ranger rides on with Tonto by his side
We're star witnesses,
clovers in the dust going for the ride
Into the distance,
the Masked Man speaks this apothegm
between you and me
Cut loose and awa-a-ay, kemosabe!

Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Hey, hey!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Yippee Yi Yay!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Hey, hey!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Yippee Yi Yay!

The Lone Ranger rides on
Riding into the sun on wings of silver
Silver bullets leaving his name,
you and me born to be one with the chase...

Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Hey, hey!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Yippee Yi Yay!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Hey, hey!
Hi-Yo, Silver! Away!
Yippee Yi Yay!

I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth
I can see the sun set and I perceive

I think what I enjoyed most
about this poem is the fact
that we DO need heros...still...
and they are few, and far,
between.

Heros, however, show up in the
most delightful packages...sometimes
we also see them as...angels...

lest we forget, anyone...
can be a hero[ine] to someone.

Well done, Noah.

Love this Noah!
My sister and I, especially Chris, loved the old western series.
So, let's saddle up sidekick and take a ride into the sunset.

Fantastic write, Noah! Another wonderful piece of Americana--and with photos! I had almost forgotten how handsome all three of them were!

Sigh...boy did you bring back memories...my personal hero was the Cisco Kid(mainly because of his exquisite horse Diablo I think) but I do remember The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, and all the rest as well...too bad kids now a days have to see such a different kind of hero

Thanks Noah for the walk down memory lane. I watched all these shows as a kid on TV and now I see they are on as reruns. Love the pic's. So many heroes of old. Roy and Dale, Gene Autry, Hopalong Cassidy, Palindin, Cisco Kid and Poncho, Zorro (he was kinda cute). These are just a few of the heroes of the past.

Noah,
I think we need heroes like this. Nowadays all men wearing masks seems to be villians. you brought the memories to life for me with this. Thank you.

BTW Did you hear the joke about The lone ranger and Tonto being trapped in a canyon, surrounded by indians. The lone ranger says "well it looks like we will die together, killed by indians" and Tonto says "what do you mean WE, white man."

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown
