The shells
glitter in the moonlight.
Small and round,
they nestle in the cool sand
near the water's edge.

The sea
softly tastes the shore.
Rippling waves
cast their moonlit patterns
to forms on sea and sand.

The beach
stretches endlessly.
Reflecting
a warm summer night, a dream
of perfect solitude.

Perfect.

But for the bodies of dead men
and a scattering of shells.

Larry W. Allen

Wow...Larry...this is such a beautiful write,
and the ending is so very powerful...like an
unforgiving slap in the face.

Very well penned, poet sir.

Wow, I like that slap of reality at the end.  I can't help but think about that when visiting "the shore".  Shells.  ~K~

I was swept away by the beauty of the images and the lilting cadence of your writing...

and then WHACK! I was slammed in the solar plexus! The contrast between the body of the poem and the ending, was very effective in sending your message out loud and clear.

Peace & Light,
and warm welcoming hugs,
Earth Angel

You have a gift for imagery (that's easy to see, heh-heh) and I truly like the way you turn an ending, rotate the entire poem on its axis.

(tears fall dwn my cheeks) Oh Larry, the ending truly was a slap in the face, sweet friend, it made me think of the terrible wars on the beaches in World War II, or lost captains and sailors at sea, and it saddens me how the ocean also has many victims captive! (wipes tears) You speak of this so well, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Larry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Exactly.   I had in mind Omaha Beach.....but a title like that would give it away.
Thank you for the kind words.
